Happy Halloween! It's not a very big deal here in New Zealand. There were a couple kids out trick-or-treating, but I didn't see one carved pumpkin. The pumpkins here that I've seen are a light yellow color and fairly small. I bought a type of squash that is the same shape as a pumpkin for the boys to paint since it was cheaper:) You can see them holding their "pumpkins" in the above photo. A local church did have a fun party called "The Light" that seemed to be the popular thing in town to do on Halloween evening. They had games, food, face painting, etc. The theme was super heroes and angels. (Cohen didn't end up going, but he was a bunny super hero??) I would say over half of the kids were in costume, most of them homemade. It was fun.
Speaking of pumpkins, we are big fans of pumpkin pie and they don't have canned pumpkin here :) so I thought I'd try out some recipes so we can have a good one for Thanksgiving. I know Jared said we wouldn't put pics of food on our blog, but I couldn't resist:) I'm sure some of you are more pioneer than I, but this pie entailed: steaming and pureeing the pumpkin, making the crust from scratch and whipping fresh cream. They don't have Cool Whip here either:) Many hours later, we were rewarded with a DELICIOUS pumpkin pie! Seriously, I was very proud. Yay for success.
Elias helped me with the pie. We thought the pureed pumpkin was very bright orange. We included a pic of him holding the NZ butter too, because it's so bright yellow. Hope you had a great day too.
